A shortlist built for the pool, not just the villa

Most villa sites list pools as a one-word amenity. For a swimwear campaign, a beauty editorial or a lifestyle brand film, that’s not enough. The shape of the pool, the length of the clean edge, the deck material under the model’s feet and what sits in the background all determine whether the shoot works or doesn’t.

Lovely Locations has walked each of these Ibiza pools with a camera. We note the hours the water stays in direct sun, where the reflection sits at golden hour, whether the coping is flush enough for a low-angle edge shot, and whether the pool is heated for a March or October swimwear day. The shortlist is built for the brief, not for bedroom count.

Why these pools

Six things that make a pool actually shoot

Water clarity and colour

We note pool colour — turquoise, pale aqua, deep navy — and whether the finish is plaster, tile or pebble. Water clarity is checked against the last service day so campaign hero frames don’t show cloudy or chemical-hazy water.

Edge length for camera positions

A long clean edge gives the photographer multiple framings: low-angle pool-level portraits, walk-outs from the waterline, reflected symmetry shots. We flag edge length and whether coping is flush enough to sit a camera on.

Heated pools for off-season shoots

March, April, October and early November swimwear days need a heated pool. We keep a current list of Ibiza villas whose pools can be warmed to around 28°C on request, plus lead time and any fuel surcharge the owner applies.

Complementary architecture

The best pool frames are built. Whitewashed finca walls, travertine decks, timber loungers, a pergola shadow — the context around the water is often what sells the shot. We match pool to set-dress on the shortlist call.

Privacy and neighbour sight-lines

Swimwear and beauty shoots need to know who can see in. We note hedged plots, neighbour proximity, overlook from adjacent hills, and whether drone activity in the area draws attention on a busy weekend.

Sunset light and pool orientation

Pool orientation decides golden hour. South and west-facing pools hold direct light longest; north-facing give softer, cooler tones all day. We note when the last sun leaves the water so schedules land on the right minute.

Planning a pool-centric shoot in Ibiza

Choosing between infinity, architectural and traditional pools

The pool archetype sets the whole frame. Infinity pools with sea views dissolve the edge into horizon — ideal when the brand wants campaign-sized vistas, long-lens portraits and water that reads as sky. Architectural and rectangular pools in modern villas deliver the clean geometry fashion photographers reach for: crisp shadow lines, travertine or concrete decks, minimal visual clutter. Traditional finca pools — rectangles framed by palm, bougainvillea and terracotta — sit warmer and more human, a better match for beauty and lifestyle work where the narrative needs softness rather than glass and steel.

Water, edges and deck materials

We check water colour against the last pool service date so a hero frame doesn’t carry chemical haze. Edge length matters: a 12- to 18-metre clean run gives the photographer several camera positions — pool-level, corner-in, reflected symmetry. Coping matters too. Flush-coped pools let a camera sit on the stone for low-angle waterline shots; raised coping locks you into standing frames. Deck material reads differently under foot — travertine and limestone hold light warmly, concrete and microcement skew cooler, natural stone adds texture for wides.

Heated pools and the Ibiza shoot calendar

Peak swimwear months in Ibiza are June through September. March, April, October and November are the cooler shoulders where a heated pool becomes essential — not for comfort but so skin doesn’t go red and hair doesn’t visibly shiver on a macro. Several of our villas heat pools to around 28°C on request, typically with two to four days’ lead time and a fuel surcharge passed through from the owner. Winter campaigns are possible but need careful villa selection: the pool must heat quickly, the deck needs afternoon sun, and you want a warm interior to reset between takes.

Permits, privacy and drones over pools

Private commercial shoots on villa property do not usually require a public film permit in Ibiza, but they do require the owner’s written consent and a location fee disclosed upfront. Drone work over residential pools is legal under Spanish EASA rules but restricted in the south-west near the airport and over some nature reserves — we pre-clear the flight zone on the shortlist. Privacy for swimwear and beauty shoots is driven by hedge lines, neighbour proximity and overlook from the surrounding hills; we flag each pool’s sight-line exposure before the recce so nothing surprises on the day.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Do these Ibiza villas have heated pools for off-season shoots?

Several do — we keep a current list of Ibiza pool villas that can heat to around 28°C on request. Typical lead time is two to four days before the shoot and owners usually pass through a fuel surcharge. Not every villa on this page is heated, so tell us the dates and we’ll filter the shortlist to properties that actually hold temperature through an October or March swimwear day.

Can I find Ibiza villas with more than one pool on-site?

Yes. A handful of the larger estates on our roster have two pools — typically a main rectangular or infinity pool for the hero frames plus a smaller plunge pool or Jacuzzi for tighter, warmer context shots. Twin-pool layouts are useful when a campaign needs multiple water looks in one day without relocating the crew.

Are underwater shots possible in these pools?

Technically yes — owners are generally comfortable with a housed camera in a clean pool. Practically, water clarity is the constraint: we time underwater work immediately after a pool service, flag whether the finish is pale plaster, tile or pebble (which affects colour), and confirm depth, which tends to run 1.4 to 2.2 metres. Heavy housed rigs or underwater lighting needs a specific conversation with the owner.

Is drone footage over the pool allowed?

Drone use is permitted on most private Ibiza properties under Spanish EASA rules, with operator registration and the owner’s consent. Airspace restrictions apply around Ibiza airport, port approaches, and some nature reserves. We pre-clear the flight zone for each villa on the shortlist and flag any location where drone work is not feasible before you commit.

Are these pools chlorine or salt water?

Both, and it genuinely matters for swimwear and skin-on-water work. Salt-chlorinated pools are gentler on skin and on saturated-colour swimsuits across a long shoot day. Traditional chlorine pools hold clarity slightly better under heavy bather load. We note the treatment per villa so you can match the pool chemistry to the crew size and wardrobe.

Can the pool be covered or lit for a night shoot?

Most pools have integrated LED or fibre-optic lighting that makes them photograph well after dusk. A few are set up for a pool cover where the brief needs a walkable surface over the water. Night shoots add a practical layer — power for continuous lighting, noise limits from neighbours, and pool temperature drop — all of which we cover on the recce call.

How do I request a pool-shoot shortlist?

Send us the shoot date(s), format (stills, film, mixed), preferred pool type (infinity, architectural, traditional) and any mood-board references. We come back within 24 hours with three to five pool villas that fit — availability-checked, with notes on water colour, edge length, light direction by hour, privacy and heated-pool status. No obligation.
